Modern-day young-earth creationists are trying their best to create some sort of “scientific” interpretation of divine creation, but the fact remains that the cosmology of the early Hebrews, and Moses (or the author of Genesis) himself, would be basically unrecognizable to anyone today, even Christians. This is a world in which God created light from nothing (the Latin term is ex nihilo), “separates” it from the darkness, but only creates the Sun – i.e. the light source - on the fourth day. We would still have light – we would still have days - without the sun, according to the Bible. That the rotation of the Earth also has something to do with it isn’t mentioned, probably because to the Hebrews the Earth was flat.

The “sky” was, to the Hebrew authors of Genesis, equally mysterious. They call it an “expanse between the waters” above and the waters below (the implication, I guess, is that the reason the sky is blue on a clear day is because we’re seeing all the water that hangs above it). Where the waters above eventually go, I’m not entirely sure, although later on the Bible says that the Great Flood was caused by dumping a large amount of it, and probably the ancient Hebrews figured that rain came from this sky-ocean, too.

Notice, too, that the moon is a “great light.” As we know today, the moon is not really a light at all, but a giant rock which works (for us) as a giant mirror. Thus, if Genesis had been written by someone with an accurate awareness of astronomy, they would have said that God created only one “great light” (the sun), and another “great mirror” (the moon).

Finally, God creates all of our plants and animals - all of them, according to the Bible, which presumably means that the various extinct and fossilized species at some point were supposed to coexist (dinosaurs, early micro-organisms, etc.) even though they never do again throughout our entire fossil record.

It can be fun to poke “scientific” holes in this story, but that’s not really the point. Genesis 1 is the account of creation, told by an ancient people who looked around them and saw an (apparently) flat Earth, surrounded by a giant blue sky-ocean and “governed” by two great lights, the sun and the moon, which moved around in the sky.

I’ve made this point before, to evangelical Christians. Those who do not attempt to bring forward a mound of dubious creationist “science” have also responded that one cannot simply discount the parts of the Bible one “doesn’t like”: in other words, if we do not trust Genesis 1 to be historical, or an accurate record of the message from God, how then can we trust any other part of the Bible?

I suppose that’s true to an extent, but frankly, you can either argue that the author of Genesis told the story of the world as he knew it and that that we know the story is simply wrong - or you can argue that God gave him the story and hid some “clues” in the subtext to let us know that an increasingly tenuous and dubious creationist “reinterpretation” of this story actually bears any relevance to the solar system as we now know it. Personally, I’m skeptical. I think the fairest way to read this is the way its original authors intended it: as a testament to the universe that they believed existed. One where the world was flat and space was full of water.
